THE SPIRIT OF LUST
âYou got more time on you?â Donna asked me quietly as we settled on her beige couch and she prepared to tell me something that she felt I might not be able to comprehend. A few nights after the Holy Spirit had chosen to indwell in her body and to âmake her a new mind,â she went to bed and, to her surprise, âwoke upâ in another world, one she would later refer to as the âspirit world.â
The first time she entered that world she was confused. She noticed that the spirit world looked just like the physical world, except it operated under different rules. For instance, in the spirit world, although her bedroom appeared a little darker than usual, it was basically the same. Her full-sized mattress still sat right in the middle of the room, and next to that, her wooden dresser with a mirror settled up against the left wall, and above that, her venetian blinds fluttering as they always did, gently in the breeze. And just like in the physical world, she possessed a body, but it was lighter and more ephemeral. She could still walk around her small apartment with legs and use hands to open doors and turn on lights or grab the remote to watch television, but she could also do things that didnât make much sense. For one, she could fly, or at least float in midair. And even when she walked, it was more like gliding as she moved across her carpet, like she was roaming with spiritual feet.
The spirit world was also full of sinister things. For example, on that first night, when she opened her intangible eyes, Donna saw a charcoal-black man with horns staring back at her. The fiend lingered in her closet doorway, with the full-figured body of a man, and a head so black that she could barely see if he had a face at all. As he shuffled out of the closet toward her, Donna noticed that âhis fingers were like claws, long claws, and he had a neck.â She froze at the edge of her bed. The man reached toward her and grabbed her arm. âLeave me alone! Iâm not bothering you!â the fiend said, as Donna flew back into her body and opened her eyes in the physical world. She looked down at her arm. It was bruised where the brute had grabbed her. She knew instantly what he wantedâto have intercourse with her. This was her first contact with the âspirit of lust,â as Donna referred to the invisible energy behind sexual violence.
âWhen he realized I wouldnât have sex with my flesh,â Donna explained, âhe came to me in spirit. He was having sex with me, and I felt like he was trying to put his seed in me.â
At the time, Donna was so bothered by the experience of an incubus visiting her for intercourse that she confided in one of her girlfriend-neighbors. Her girlfriend suggested that she try confronting the demonic entity.
